Update on Works
Work is moving along on our new facility but in the meantime, we ask everyone to follow all the health & safety procedures, particularly all our children participating in the Cúl Camp.
Adult Games
Well done to our Intermediate Hurlers last Saturday on another Championship win v Clanna Gael Fontenoy, to continue our unbeaten run. Our Junior teams had mixed results with our 1st team defeating Ballinteer while our second teams lost out by just one point.

Fantastic win for our Adult Camogie team tonight as they opened their championship campaign, playing away v Naomh Barróg in Junior 1 Championship for the very first time. The team started slowly to fall 0.05 to 0.01 down after 15 mins but a Niamh Gavin goal settled Fins and from thereon they played great to lead 1.06 to 1.05 at half time. A superb second half saw Fins run out 5.09 to 2.09 winners.
A great win to start the campaign. !!
This Saturday evening sees our Senior Footballers take on St. Maurs at 6pm in Rush. Both teams won their opening fixtures so both will be keen to keep up their winning ways on Saturday. Best of luck lads & we hope to see lots of travelling support which would be very welcome.

A big week also for Fins ladies 1st team with their second game in the Intermediate Championship this week. The Ladies play at home on Wednesday at 7.15pm v Ballinteer St. Johns. We really need a big crowd down to get behind the girls. Their first game v Man O War last Wednesday saw a big improvement with lots of youth added to the more experienced players on the team. There was some great football on display from veteran players such as Niamh Rickard and Emer Ní Éafa pulling off some fine saves. There was also solid displays from our minor girls notably Niamh Crowley at wing back and Katelyn Treacy in her senior championship debut. Well done to all players and best of luck on Wednesday.

Juvenile Section
U/15 Camogie
Well done to Gemma Connolly who represented Dublin U15 Camogie in a blitz in Laois.
Also, well done to Sophie McKeating, Niamh & Ciara Barrett who played in the Dublin U15 Camogie Development Blitz in Palmerstown.
U/11 Hurlers
Our U/11 hurlers had a fantastic morning last Wednesday taking part in the Leinster Go-Games at Croke Park. Great to see them go up the steps of the Hogan Stand after their win. Well done to all!!
Coaching Initiative
The hurling coaching initiative for all players 11 years and older started back last Sunday and great to see lots of players enjoying the sunshine with their well earned ice creams afterwards. This will run most Sundays over the next few months and team mentors will keep parents/children advised of times. All welcome!
Also after a two week break the Friday night hurling returns this week at 6pm Main Pitch with all our younger members welcome.

Down Memory Lane
Fingallian’s Famous Festival - From Dave McKittrick
The recent heatwave just passed that had us all feeling good and out and about reminds many of our older club members of a period in time when one the biggest gigs of the summer was the Fingallians festival.
Two weeks of sport, music, ice creams, carnivals with plenty of sunburn and lashings of calamine lotion to ease the pain and creating loads of great memories. The first two weeks of July were earmarked for the annual festival held within the grounds of Lawless Memorial Park. Every year the executive would kick into action early to ensure the tops bands and
acts would be available to rock the Marquee in July. Many big groups participated over those years and included all the top dance bands of the era, The 70s saw acts like Gina and the Champions, Linda Martin and Chips, while the 80s saw Teddy Palmer as well as bands including Mammas Boys, Dreams, Tokyo Olympics, local band Rif Raff and many others.
While in the clubhouse a lot of the top Ballad bands would be lined up to entertain. The arrival of the Marquee brought a great buzz around the town as the juvenile playing pitch (now the All-weather pitch ) would be transformed by the Marquee which took up bottom half of the pitch and the other half was used to facilitate McCormack’s or Mc Fadden’s amusements .
To coincide with the music a feast of football, camogie and hurling games were held within the two weeks cumulating with two games every night. The cups played for during this era are still on show within the clubhouse. Some of the cups were presented by local business and families. The games ran from u10 right up to senior, with some cracking finals. Over the years saw many good junior finals with local rivals St Colmcilles, u21 against O Dywer’s and Minor v Skerries. The main game of the festival would have been the senior final for Bartle Mc Donald cup which was held on the last Sunday to close the festival and would have filled both side-lines on the pitch with supporters. These games were usually against Parnells or St Margaret’s with many a feisty tackle thrown in for good measure to keep the side-lines riled up. Many players from Parnells or Maggies would have had to run the gauntlet of the Fins side-line and that of the legendry four Fins ladies (Ethna, Maggie, Ginnie, Beth,) who weren’t short of letting players know their feelings towards them and if taken a line ball may have got a tap of an umbrella or handbag!
The first week would have been all about the juvenile section and some great games and memories where created during these matches. The club was not known to have a big camogie, LGFA or hurling section at that time but each section was included in to the roster of games, notably the camogie section under Menna Rickard and Martha Byrne, and the ladies football under Sean Foley and Ethna O Hara. The Hurling teams would have been managed by Vi Delaney and Joe Walsh and in the 80 and 90’s by many of the juvenile mentors of the time people like Tom O Connell, Liam Connor, Colm Crowley, Sean Broderick Tony Mills come to mind. But the showcase were the Marquee activities and the festival carnival or marquee was probably the place where many a romance started!! From Kids discos on Mondays , Super Bingo on Tuesday with Bill Gallagher and Peter Mc K giving out about people shouting out check from outside the marquee, Old Time or Ceile dancing on Wednesdays, Teenage discos Friday and the infamous late Friday and Sunday nights with the dance bands from 11-2am, thee was fun for everyone. The late Sunday nights made getting up for work at 6am to go fruit picking an lot harder of a Monday morning... Many a person would have sauntered out of the dances at 3am only to be met by John Pendor and his famous guard dogs doing his rounds which sobered up a lot of lads to leave the clubhouse area quickly :-)
The carnival was a different atmosphere all together and it was possible the only time of the year that Swords people got to have fun without travelling down to the famous holiday spots in the southeast. The Bumper cars with people jumping on the back when they started up, Chair-o-planes and the famous Swinging Boats were fun for all. The activities during the days of both weekends were phenomenal from Army Displays to Pipe band competition, inter factory “It’s a knockout competition”. We even hosted the famous celebrity football match with the legendary Jimmy Magee Allstars.
The Opening Parade down Main Street was a magnificent sight where you had all groups and clubs march behind the Black Raven Pipe band and many of the home made and the big Abel Alarms floats. Then onto the club grounds for a family fun day which consisted of multi sports day, bonnie baby, glamorous granny, and all the famous carnival games. We still remember the the famous nappy line competition, for the dads which was hilarious to watch, or the competitive nature of the penalty shoot outs and the target golf. But the highlight of the day for children was the penny on a plate to win a goldfish and then watching mothers get excited at the wheel
of fortune. Many a box of biscuits or hamper was won over the years.
To all the famous Fins people on executives over the years thanks for the memories of a generation who had the pleasure of getting to see the famous festival in full flow. Hopefully in the coming years we may go back to hosting the summer festival and create new memories for a different generation of club members.
