Yes, it's that time of year again when all in Fingallians get to wish the best of luck to all those sitting their State Exams. Even though you have heard it a millions time by now, its worth repeating 'the Leaving Cert is not the be all and end all and there are now many routes to your dreams' it's true. We will be thinking of you all and we know you will be looking forward to a well earned rest when they are all over.

Juvenile Section
What a great footballing weekend for our U/15 Girls. First up on Friday evening the girls headed to Rush to play St. Maurs in a Div. 3 top of the table clash and came out on top by 6 points in a thrilling game. The following morning the girls met up in the Club at 8am to go to Rathleague, Portlaoise for the John West Regional Féile Peil na nÓg .
The first game was at 10.30am v Cill Óige (Westmeath) and the girls got off to a flying start winning by 5-7 to 2-2. Next up were Glen Emmets (Louth), again another comprehensive win 5-8 to 0-0. Then in the final group game it was Clara LGFA (Kilkenny) in a tight game we came out on top (1-7 to 1-1) to top the group.
The girls then went on to play one of the local teams in the semi final. Despite Ballyfin having a large support, the girls rose to the occasion and went on to win 5-13 to 1-0.
Getting a well earned break between games
After a long day, the final was now set for 4.40pm with a repeat of an earlier pairing Fingallians v Clara LGFC. Even though the previous game between the two teams was closely contested, this game was very different with the girls putting on a super display and winning 6-13 to 0-2 .
Well done to all the team and congratulations to all the mentors, coaches and all involved. Fins Abú

Death of Joe Walsh
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of one of Fingallians greats, Mr. Joe Walsh Snr who passed away on Saturday morning.
Joe was one of the founding members who helped with the formation of Fingallians Athletic Club in the late 60s early 70s. Joe alongside Vi Delaney, Cyril Gallagher and Jimmy Harford started the Community Games for the children of Glasmore in the late 60s. Many training sessions were held on the green opposite his house and the warmups would have consisted of a couple of laps of the housing estate followed by a few longer runs up the Brackenstown Rd towards the Cradle House. In the early 70s, Joe and his Community Games team, Martin Wheeler, Paddy Kelly, Harry Hanratty and his wife Bernie began the athletics club in Fingallians to avail of the training facilities. With many a Monday and Wednesday night spent on the main pitch doing lap after lap in preparation for the cross country season under the NACA banner. Joe had a passion to get everyone to perform to their best potential and no matter what level of fitness you had Joe would know what race would be best suited to individuals.
Many a great day was had out in the wind and rain of the early springtime around the muddy courses of every county in Ireland. One of the highlights was when Joe entered the club into the juvenile section of the Rás Na h'Éireann in Dunleer which attracted teams from all over the world. Joe was more than a trainer, his encouragement to all to get past that finish line will always be remembered. The famous red and white tracksuit will be etched in many people's minds as they think of him this week.
Another big day out was the road races in Dunboyne on Easter Sunday and the Liberties Road Race at midnight on New Years Eve and where the singsong on the way back from all these events became legendary.
Joe's vision for the whole of Swords to be represented at the Community Games started with a big sports day held on the main pitch. Many different events from sprints, middle distance, javelin, shot put, long and high jump were on show. Joe's interest never waned from the athletics over the years and along with Bernie, Joe Evans and many others kept the Fins flag flying high in Santry Stadium over the last 50 years. Joe's influence on many athletes who passed through his hand will never be forgotten. His pride watching Fins athletes performing such as our Olympian Mark Howard in Sydney. The most precious memory for the Walsh family was the success of Joe's daughter Catherine with her bronze medal in the Sydney paralympics and then adding a silver in London.
The club presented Joe and Bernie with the lifetime achievement a few years ago in gratitude for their tireless work in promoting athletics in the club and wider Swords community. Over the last few decades Fingallians athletics club has progressed from humble beginnings of the roads around Swords to athletes performing at major sporting venues worldwide. This vision of Fingallians performing at top class level was formed by the passion of many people over the last 50 years but most notably by one man by the name of Joe Walsh.
To his wife Bernie, family Bernie,Tom, Joe, David, Simon, Laura, Catherine and Michael the club passes on our heartfelt condolences. His memory will be forever etched in Fingallians Gaa Club. May he rest in Peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
