The GAA’s New Gambling Awareness Campaign

The GAA’s new gambling awareness campaign, ‘Stop Before You Just Can’t Stop’, is designed to help people recognise some of the behaviours associated with problem gambling and to access as soon as possible the support services available to them.

The campaign is funded by Gambling Awareness Trust and support by Problem Gambling Ireland. The GAA’s work in the field of gambling awareness recognises that the research that highlights athletes as an at-risk group when it comes to problem gambling. The timing of the campaign launch – during the reopening of society in Q1 2022 – also recognises reports of a significant increases in online gambling during the pandemic.

The campaign message is clear: if you feel you are exhibiting any of the warning signs or behaviours associated with problem gambling and want to ‘stop before you can’t stop’, avail of the services provided by ProblemGambling.ie. Their professional support can make all the difference.

Awards Night of the Past
This week we get to celebrate our Awards Night again for the first time in 2 years. Over the years the Presentation/ Awards Night was one of the main social gatherings for the club. In bygone days the presentations were held in the Sluagh Hall opposite the clubhouse - which is now the gym and boxing club.

Awards Night mid 1960's

During the sixties, seventies and eighties the Awards Night was held in many of the top hotels around North Dublin  and it was a time for players, mentors, club committee members and their families to put on the best suits and  gowns and enjoy a memorable night.

Junior League & Cup Winners:
Paddy Mulligan - Chairman, David McKittrick, Paul Gormley, Tom McKittrick, Brian Creagh, Ciaran Farrell, Paul Molloy, Ciaran Duff,
Paul Maguire, Bren McKittrick, Peter Caul - Manager, Derek McKittrick

After the building of the new club premises the annual dinner dance as it was part of the end of season calendar with the club main hall decked out in club colours and over 250 members attending. each year with five course meals and top entertainment to dance the night away.  Following the club fire it moved back to the local  hotels across the north county and members still recall the banter on the bus journey to and from the venues and many a good sing-song on the journey home.

Intermediate Ladies Champions 2004/5
With the completion of the current clubhouse the Annual Social and Awards Night (its new name ) was held in January to allow players to attend the pre-season festivities.
Over the years the chit chat at the tables over dinner was who would win the top awards with many a side bet being wagered on the results. From the mid nineties the club introduced a Hall of Fame and Club Person of Year Award  to acknowledge the efforts of club members throughout the year and their involvement with Fingallians throughout the Clubs history.

Some of the names who received the club person award were  Liam O'Cuilbaird, Kyran O'Brien, Nicky Fitzgerald, Mick Kennedy, Joe Murphy, Frank Markey, Ciaran Reidy, Gerry Greene, Packie Barnwell, Sharon Groves and in 2019 Joe Murphy. The Hall of Fame Award has been received by the following legends within the club over the years , Catherine Walsh, Joe and Bernie Walsh. Peter and Noreen McKittrick, Bill Gallagher, Pauric Murphy, Cait Ni Cheallaigh, Derry Murphy, Wally and Nellie Galvin, Derek Mc Kittrick, and in 2019 Colm Crowley. Most of the Player of Year Awards also have a perpetual trophy, which were presented to the club in memory of family members. Who will be the lucky winners of the awards this year?  Check out the clubs social pages Saturday morning for the big news on results. To be also able to finally celebrate all our recent big championship wins, it will be bigger than the Oscars results and the pics of the glitz and glam on the red carpet should be worth checking out.. Roll on Friday night.!!!
